enlightened by modesty
Ich, dieses hochmütige Wesen
halte mich für so allwissend
unübertroffen
über alles erhaben
allein herrschend
Das andere Wesen
uralt und überall
unsichtbar wirkend
weder Pflanze noch Tier
schaffend und zerstörend
bald Freund, bald Feind
hier das größte,
dort das kleinste
aller anderen Wesen.
Im feuchten Wald
ganz unten bei den Moosen
zeigt sich mir das Wesen
Nicht ich sondern es,
formt die Erfüllung
von so vielem Leben hier
unten, in und auf der Erde
oben, in den Lüften
drüben, in allen Wassern
seit Urzeiten her
Voller Demut verstumme ich
im duftenden Laub
des letzten Herbstes
Jetzt erkenne ich
diese wahre Natur
eines so erhabenen Wesens
und die meiner eigenen Unwissenheit

I, this arrogant being,
think I am so omniscient,
incomparable, above all,
the only one who rules.
The other being,
ancient and everywhere,
working invisibly,
neither plant nor animal,
creating and destroying,
sometimes friend, sometimes enemy,
here the greatest,
there the smallest
of all other beings.
In the damp forest,
at the very bottom
among the mosses,
the being shows itself to me
Not me but it
moulds the fulfillment
of so much of life here
below, in and on the earth
above, in and around the air
over there, in all the waters
since ancient times
Full of humility
I fall silent
amongst the odorous leaves
of last autumn
Now I realise
the true nature
of such a sublime being
and that of my own ignorance

Wie können wir unseren Drang nach ständiger Expansion mit Bescheidenheit in Einklang bringen, um eine längerfristige Existenz auf der Erde zu erreichen? How can we balance our urge for continuous expansion with humility to achieve a longer-lasting existence on earth? This nature poem puts humankind in its place by comparing us to fungi, an integral part of the earth’s evolving life and nature’s intricate web of life. With humility, we can acknowledge the limitations of our knowledge and become more tolerant and appreciative of life’s endless possibilities.

I love this poem. In my own interpretation God is in nature and in the universe. And in observing nature, we are reminded of how finite we are in the grand nature of the universe.
